The Senior Slam is more complicated than the regular grand slam because there are five tournaments considered to be major championships. No one has ever accomplished it, but Stewart Cink has won the first two and put himself in the conversation.
Cink, a Georgia Tech graduate and longtime Atlanta resident, won The Tradition in Birmingham on Sunday, May 3, by shooting 18-under 270 and posting a three-shot win over Brad Hend.
Cink won the Senior PGA Championship two weeks ago in Florida. Still to come: The U.S. Senior Open, the Senior Players Championship and the Senior Open Championship.
“One of the things I’m doing a pretty good job of is just kind of staying in the moment,” Cink said. “I’m enjoying Regions Tradition right now. I played well enough to win here. It wasn’t too long ago that I didn’t play well enough to win, that was in the Mitsubishi Electric Classic in Atlanta. It feels good to get back in the winner’s circle again, of course. I
“ hope there’s a lot more times coming. This is a fun window to be involved in on the Champions Tour, on the PGA TOUR Champions, so I feel like I kind of found a little bit of a footing in it and it’s hopefully going to last a long time, but it’s been fun.”
Cink continues to build on last year’s success, when he won three times, including the Charles Schwab Cup. This year he’s won four times (in seven starts) including three of the last four events.
The week also additional significance for Cink, who was asked to serve as vice captain at the 2027 Ryder Cup by Jim Furyk. Cink had openly campaigned for the position, but happily accepted the role on staff.
“He was part of my ’23 Ryder Cup when I was assistant there, he was also assistant, and I vice-captained for him at Montreal last time, 2024,” Cink said. “So we have quite a track record playing together, being in the captain’s rooms together. I’m just honored that he thinks enough of my presence in the team room to tag me as a vice captain. I’m going to do everything I can for our team to win.”
